This concert features the music of Barbara Strozzi, the pioneering composer and singer of 17th-century Venice, fabled for her extraordinary voice and music alike. Strozzi published eight collections of vocal works during her lifetime containing over a hundred works in total, and her music became known throughout Europe. Few composers paint human emotion as vividly or with greater insight, wit and poignancy than Barbara Strozzi, whose songs and madrigals stand alongside Monteverdi’s as some of the greatest of the age.
Conductor-singer Paul Flight, with a stellar ensemble of singers and instrumentalists, brings to life the splendid ensemble pieces of Strozzi's first collection, her Opus 1, including four and five part madrigals, trios and duets, alongside the laments, arias, and intricate cantatas of her later opuses for which Strozzi is best known.
